The "military" is defined as embracing all active-duty members of a nation's armed forces (army, navy, air corps) and excludes all semi- or paramilitary forces, save in a limited number of cases (such as Japan and Panama) where de facto military establishments are not formally acknowledged. In the case of Switzerland, which does not maintain a continuously active military establishment, estimates of active-duty reserves are utilized.
